“The Potato Hunter”
1991 on 16 mm film— I saw this a year or so ago and absolutely loved it. It’s a combination of claymation and found objects, made before video editing software was available and this sort of animation was a matter of intensive planning and hoping to God you got the shot you were looking for. Timothy Hittle has a way of taking a simple characer and putting a lot of life into them, and among his videos, I’m choosing this one because there’s a herd of potatoes. Imagine how hard it is to sequence a jump in clay. They’re only the air for a second on camera, but it requires a lot of rigging to keep them suspended long enough to get a photo. And that music is fantastic. So HAVE A LOOKSIE

Even with computer editing software, the subtleties in this would be amazing. The little things really bring the character to life. It’s a pretty endearing if not kind of bizarre piece of animation, so HAVE A LOOKSIE INDEED…
